The Golden Globes have come and gone, but those eye-catching outfits are still on my mind. Filipino fashion designers are stealing the scene now more than ever, gaining worldwide acclaim by dressing the stars in their uniquely beautiful pieces. While I’m no fashionista, a couple of my past experiences put me in touch with the fashion world. Having worked for an art school with a prominent fashion program, I attended New York Fashion Week a handful of times. And when I got engaged seven years ago, my first wedding must-have was a dress brought to life by a Filipino designer. It just so happened my fairy ninang’s go-to dressmaker was the one and only Oliver Tolentino—and I’ve been following him and his contemporaries ever since.

Now, whenever I tune into an awards show or other star-studded event, I feel an ever-so-slightly refined sensibility for spotting the work of Filipino fashion designers. When Lana Condor entered my social media feeds, something about the crystal and pearl embellishments, along with the sheer panels made me immediately Google who she was wearing. Sure enough, it turned out to be Michael Cinco, a Filipino designer based in Dubai. This got me thinking… what other red carpet creations were the work of Filipino fashion designers?

Oliver Tolentino designed a dress for Margaret Gardiner (Miss Universe 1978) and a tuxedo for Jon Jon Briones (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story).

Monique Lhullier dressed a whopping eight stars for the festivities: Kaley Cuoco, Linda Cardellini, Isla Fisher, Amber Heard, Jameela Jamil, Heidi Klum, Emmy Rossum, and Keri Russell. Here are my absolute favorite dresses.

I can’t wait to see what these designers (and hopefully other fresh Filipino talent) cook up for the rest of awards season! Until then, I’ll be stalking their Instagram feeds for any hint of what’s hitting the red carpet next.
